Critical What does this mean?
A safety-rated fault — there may be a risk of electric shock, fire, or equipment damage. Do not try to fix this yourself. Call a qualified electrician.
SolarEdge Inverter Error 8X2B: Meaning, Causes & Safe Fix
Ground fault detected — current is leaking from your DC system to earth. This is an electrical shock hazard. Do not touch the inverter or any wiring; switch the inverter off if you can reach the switch safely and call your installer immediately.
What should I do first?
Two quick questions — we'll point you to the right starting point.
Is this code still showing on your inverter's display?
Is your system producing power right now?
What this code means
The inverter's residual current device (RCD) measured ground leakage current above the safe limit, meaning electricity is escaping from the DC side of your solar system to earth. On three-phase inverters with CPU v3.19xx firmware this appears as 8x2B or 8x2C (a third variant, 8x39, exists for the same fault family). SolarEdge's manual carries an explicit ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD warning for this fault and states that only a qualified technician should handle it.What is this downtime costing you?
Rough estimate while your system isn't producing. Adjust the numbers to match your setup.
≈ – kWh of lost production per day.
Estimate only — assumes ~80% real-world output vs. nameplate. Actual losses depend on weather, shading, panel direction, and your tariff.
Common causes
- Damaged cable insulation or moisture ingress allowing current to leak to earth (the manual notes 'ground faults may occur due to insufficient insulation to the ground')
- A faulty power optimizer leaking current
- A damaged solar panel or junction box
- Pinched, chafed, or rodent-damaged DC wiring
Safe steps to try
Work top to bottom, ticking off each step as you complete it. 0 of 5 done.
Is your inverter still under warranty?
Before paying for a repair, check — your installer may fix this free.
Based on typical standard warranty terms — always confirm with your warranty card or installer paperwork, as terms vary by model, region, and purchase date.
When to call an electrician
Immediately. Per the SolarEdge manual: 'Only a qualified technician should handle this problem, and only after taking proper precautions.' The technician must switch off the inverter, wait five minutes for capacitors to discharge, disconnect AC and DC, then test each string individually to find the faulty one. Never reconnect a string with a ground fault.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just restart the inverter to clear a ground fault?
No. A ground fault means electricity is leaking somewhere it shouldn't. Restarting without finding the leak is dangerous — this one always needs a professional inspection first.
Is a ground fault dangerous?
Yes — it is an electrical shock hazard. The manual explicitly warns not to touch uninsulated wires. Keep people and pets away from the equipment until a technician has checked it.
What usually causes a SolarEdge ground fault?
Most often it's damaged insulation or moisture getting into a connector, cable, or junction box — frequently after storms or as wiring ages. Your installer will test each string to find the faulty one.
Need a professional?
This fault is a safety risk — do not attempt to fix it yourself. Contact a qualified solar electrician in your area.
